Mornings are a very important part of one’s day. It sets the tone of how the rest of the day will be for you. If your day starts on a sour note (perhaps you spilled coffee on your favorite white skirt), there is a 99% possibility that the rest of your day won’t go well. This is why it is very important that your morning starts on a very good note.

The morning habits of successful people shape how the rest of their day goes and ultimately, it contributes to their level of success. Therefore, if you truly want to be successful then you should learn to adopt some of these habits into your own morning routine.

Below are 10 morning habits of successful people that set the pace for a successful day if only you adopt them:

1. They wake up early

You probably know how it feels waking up late for work, school or a meeting. This is often as a result of sleeping late the previous night or snoozing your alarm several times! Whichever it is, you are likely to be very angry or anxious, in a rush and cranky, which further dictates your whole mood for the remaining part of the day.

Successful people understand that waking up early gives them the liberty to do other things they should get done before the whole world gets up and starts moving around. It also means that they won’t be late for anything planned out for the day.

If you want to adopt the habit of waking up early, it is best you get sound sleep the previous night and program your mind and body to wake up as early as possible. This is advisably between 4-5am (okay, maybe not on Saturdays). If you set an alarm clock to wake you, make sure you don’t press the snooze button when it rings and then go back to sleep. Push yourself to get out of the bed and get going against all odds.

You could drink a cup of water to refresh yourself or splash water on your face to help make you more awake. Cold showers have many uses, and helping you wake up is one of them!

2. They wake up naturally and if not, they set their alarm for the same time everyday without snoozing it

According to research, most successful people wake up naturally without an alarm. They set their mind to wake up at a particular time everyday just the way they set a goal and achieve it. If you can’t get around waking up naturally, you should set an alarm to wake you up at the same time everyday, without snoozing it and going back to sleep. This will help you program your body and mind so that you can eventually wake up naturally early in the morning.

Again, according to research, snoozing your alarm and going back to sleep disrupts your sleep cycle and puts you in a state called sleep inertia. This causes difficulty in performing even simple daily tasks. Although it typically lasts 15-30 minutes, sleep inertia can last as long as 4 hours (bet you didn’t know that, huh).

Being able to get up at the right time is the very first step to sticking to your other plans throughout the day. It is always tempting to snooze your alarm when it rings and get right back to sleep. But if you are serious about being successful, then you need to get up and get going at the right time.

3. They work out

Working out is one of the highly effective morning habits of successful people. It helps you to be more awake in the morning and eases your body and mind for the day ahead.

Exercise is also a very good way to keep fit and physically healthy. Just as some successful people do, you could be listening to a motivational or educational podcast or audio while working out, thereby killing two birds with one stone.

According to Robin Sharma in his book, The 5AM Club, sweating in the first 20 minutes of the day has many benefits. Sweating releases BDNF, a brain chemical that helps to repair the brain cells damaged by stress and makes new neural connections grow. Developing new brain cells boosts your ability to learn, improve memory, and prevent depression, anxiety, e.t.c.

4. They meditate

Just like working out, meditation is a form of mind exercise. It has been proven to help fight against anxiety, increase positive emotions and strengthen your willpower.

Meditation simply entails training your mind to understand the world the way it is, accepting what cannot be changed, fighting for what should be improved on and bringing one’s life into a well-oriented perspective by exercising the right motivation.

By beginning your day with this, it keeps you feeling smarter and happier and also helps you to approach situations and make decisions with clarity.

5. They spend time with their family

Although most successful people are usually busy trying to make sure their businesses and careers go smoothly, they always find the time to spend with their family and they adopt this in their morning routine.

Spending time with your family could mean having breakfast with them, especially since it’s the most important meal of the day (or so they say), or just having a heart to heart conversation.

You have a lot to benefit from by spending quality time with your family and loved ones. It helps to build a stronger bond in the family. And if you have kids, it helps them learn from the adults and eventually become better adults themselves. Also, it leaves everyone feeling happy, being able to carry out their daily activities knowing that they have a family that loves and supports them.

6. They prepare a to-do list to guide them through the day

One of the very important morning habits of successful people is having a structure that helps them schedule their work hours daily, so they don’t just spend their day aimlessly doing nothing (or everything).

You need to strategically plan and write down how you want your day to go. Include the activities you will engage in, and where and when they will go down. Having a to-do list also helps to prioritize your tasks for the day, keeps you on track so that you  can complete those tasks and achieve your goals, and most importantly, curbs procrastination and increases productivity.

7. They don’t scroll through their Social media or email first thing in the morning

With the advent of a lot of social media apps, people are making their phones a priority over more important things in their life. Little wonder why we don’t even check to see if we can talk when we wake up in the morning before taking our phones to start scrolling through social media.

Although the digital world has its own advantages, if not used properly, one may lose sight and focus of the most important things to do and spend your whole day just scrolling through social media pages, checking and liking posts, and chatting.

It is best to do other productive things like exercising, meditation and consuming inspiring materials when one wakes up in the morning, and set the right pace for the day ahead. You can leave scrolling through your social media pages for when you have started your day or later during lunch break.

It might be a daunting task especially if you are already accustomed to this way of life, but one of the important habits of successful people is self discipline, you need to be able to control yourself and stay away from things that aren’t adding any value to your life.

If you truly want to be successful, then you need to focus on doing the right thing at the right time.

8. They avoid decision stress

A day is made up of just 24 hours and most times we don’t even get to complete all the tasks we have scheduled within that time frame, so it would be bad to start stressing over making unimportant decisions in the morning.

For example, it is essential that you dress neat and sharp, but you shouldn’t have to start worrying and scattering your wardrobe when you wake up in the morning, in search of the right clothes for the day. That just leaves you stressed out and wastes your time.

It is better to do such things the previous night or during your spare time over the past days. It is important that you reserve your mental energy and decision making brain power for more important matters.

9. They get inspired and boost their creativity

Inspiration is the spice of life.

Some mornings we are fully charged up to take on the world and other times we just want to drown in our sorrows. But what differentiates successful people from those who aren’t, in the moment when they are feeling down, is that they don’t give in to the situation. Instead, they find a way to deal with it. What better way to do that than to get inspired and motivated?

There are limitless books and articles to read, audios and podcasts to listen to and videos to watch in order to get inspired and energized to take the day head-on.

Sometimes you need to make a conscious effort to be able to get things done and not drown in your sorrows, especially if you are going through hard times. Also, one very effective way to free your mind and boost your creativity is by putting your thoughts down in a journal. Journaling helps you to relieve stress and purge your mind of anything that may be worrying you.

You can also write down your goals and visions in your journal. By doing this, you are registering your goals and visions in your mind, and this helps to turn them into a reality. Keeping a journal and being consistent with it also helps your mind to wander freely and boosts your creativity.

10. They are grateful for what they have

Often, we get so caught up in trying to achieve our big goals, that we forget to be grateful for the little things we have that count. Things like being able to breathe and waking up everyday healthy.

Starting your day with practicing gratitude helps you to start off on the right track, according to Tony Robbins, “When you’re grateful you can’t be angry. And when you’re grateful you can’t be fearful.”

When you wake up in the morning, sit down, take a deep breath and think of at least 3 things that you are grateful for, no matter how little they may seem. Just take some minutes to think about it and let the gratitude and happiness surround your thoughts. By expressing gratitude, you are positively influencing your behavior and attitude for that day.

Make a habit of these morning routines

In conclusion, considering the fact that most successful people always start their day with these effective routines, it is highly recommended that you engage in most, if not all of these morning habits of successful people everyday.

The best way to accomplish this is to devote a certain amount of time to each of these activities daily. Start carrying them out right from the second you wake up.

Morning routines can last for as long as an hour and as little as five minutes, so you can’t really give the excuse that “there is no time.” You can start with baby steps and grow through the process gradually. It is also very important that you don’t procrastinate while carrying out these routines—be consistent with them.

Having a productive day and life isn’t difficult if you can adopt certain habits that will help you scale through the ups and downs of life and achieve your goals. Before you know it, other people will be emulating YOUR habits as a successful person.
